amanda says... Hey guys - like most gardeners - I really like looking at pics of folks gardens - hence I put mine on. Happy Earth has great ones too. It can be overwhelming when u have to start from scratch - so I hope this is inspiring for someone "out there".... I did plan this garden for quite sometime - still have my original plans etc...this is my very first garden so I there is still much I would change in hindsight (I would make it smaller for one!!) The biggest trees were planted around Aug 06 and I hand watered them. They were my "back bone" trees and wind breaks. The rest of the garden in front of the house is 2.5 yrs old....I planted it after the house was completed in Feb08. Most of it is from tubestock. The orchard is 3yrs old. The driveway about 4yrs. The pics here are what I was left with after the building finished in Jan08 - a mess - it took tonnes of wetta soil to fix the repellancy issues caused by the disturbance of the sand. One pic here is the biolytix going in (Jun07) and the background is the garden in front of the house.... The other is me in the west garden bed about Mar08 and that garden bed today! Great growing soil and climate - shame about the weather and lack of water though - hence the move south - can't wait to see what I can do down there!

BJ says... Amanda, I think I remember vaguely that you mentioned somewhere that you wanted to be a presenter on "Gardening Australia" ... maybe you can get them to pop up and do a segment on what can be achieved before you have to leave the block?! I'd watch it. Plus I'm sure you'd have loads of tips of "how to do it even better next time" from everythign you've learned. | About the Author BJ11 WA 6th July 2010 5:00pm #UserID: 3414 Posts: 215 View All BJ11's Edible Fruit Trees |

amanda says... Yea - but who can afford to own acreage there Brad? :-)) I bet they get a lot more rain too...that's really the key isn't it - you can actually grow quite well in this deep sandy loam with lots of water. Good drainage makes anything possible. It's interesting to note that the sand on our block that has never been disturbed or compacted is not water repellant at all...I often wonder at the so called 'bonus' of sands being easier to "work" - it just seems to be the worst thing to do it (here anyway). It seems almost impossible to get the soil to form a 'crumb' structure too...it collapses so easily. In hindsight I wonder if just layering everything on top of the sand, and then being super careful not to bring it back to the surface, is the go? Hey - looks like good rains on thursday at last anyway ...I hope I can finally stop watering for the winter! (PS - thanks for the encouragement guys - but I don't really know that much to be honest!? Most of this is trial n error - I have had many deaths-in-the-family and many bad choices that I have pulled out as well...hubby would cringe if he knew the real cost of this garden....oops) | About the Author amanda19 Geraldton. amanda says... Hi Karen & Paul - it's actually quite different 'sand' I think - down in Perth it's "Bassendean sands" - that stuff is awful! That yellow sub-sand in the picture is quite good stuff and its very very deep. Yes we are leaving - the weather really getting to me here. We are looking around Busselton way. How is your garden going? You started one from scratch too didn't u? | About the Author amanda19 Geraldton. WA 7th July 2010 4:50pm #UserID: 2309 Posts: 4607 View All amanda19's Edible Fruit Trees |

Karen & Paul says... Yes Amanda and yes you have inspired me so before you ask I will do a little run of progress shots. Still not a lot happening in the way of trees I'm afraid ~ we are recovering from the financial shock of building (to put it nicely) hehehe But I am excited that I have planted my Pink Euodias (thanks Speedy) and the vegie patch is booming. So I have a few inspiring before and afters there. I will get clicking over the next few days IF it stops raining! Sorry you don't want to hear that do you :-/ Ok so back to you... oooh Busselton, very nice :-) I lived on the West Coast back in 2000 so I'd imagine it has changed a little since then but that was where I really loved it, those Southern Coastal areas are heaven. Oh Dunsborough... gorgeous! Do you have to be by the beach? Do you own a surfer? Paul could never live more than 10 minutes from the beach or he'd go mad. Have you looked at Pemberton, Denmark etc on the road over to Albany. Absolutely beautiful... and from memory it seemed very "fertile" :-) lovely bush/forests and quaint towns. Might be a little too far South though and as I said off the coast. Photos of progress to come ;-) | About the Author Paul Karen1 Pottsville NSW 7th July 2010 8:47pm #UserID: 3143 Posts: 50 View All Paul Karen1's Edible Fruit Trees |

Karen & Paul says... Oh and yes the sand and the dry in Scarborough is what drove me back to the East Coast so I know all about moving for climate reasons. I don't know how many tonnes of organic matter I dug into my tiny garden only to watch it turn to sand within a week... I know a little more now and learnt a lot from that garden... Good luck with the house hunt ;-) | About the Author Paul Karen1 Pottsville NSW 7th July 2010 8:55pm #UserID: 3143 Posts: 50 View All Paul Karen1's Edible Fruit Trees |

Rev says... lol re 26th parallel After id moved to gero i swore id never move south of there again. I did , but i always regretted it. The weather in the SW is milder, though frankly i thought the people and subculture were different than the north, in the negative direction. Your Mileage may vary... | About the Author Rev North qld 8th July 2010 3:44am #UserID: 1806 Posts: 359 View All Rev 's Edible Fruit Trees |

Karen & Paul says... hahaha I thought that North and South of the River was only a Perth thing... geez you Westies keep it goin right up there hey? So funny! I find myself agreeing with you though eeek... I hate to categorise people but you are so right. I travelled down the entire West Coast and yes found the Northerners far more laid back and dare I say a little "rough". I always liked to class myself as a "North of he River girl" hehehe The South Coast is so beautiful though... shame we can't have the best of both worlds hey? | About the Author Paul Karen1 Pottsville NSW 8th July 2010 10:33am #UserID: 3143 Posts: 50 View All Paul Karen1's Edible Fruit Trees |

snottiegobble says... Amanda, dont take any notice of this North/south crap. The people in Capel are the most genuine, friendly, helpful folks I have ever met anywhere. Damned lucky to have picked it & all thanks to Google Earth!! Still NO frost since moving here so maybe we can grow coconuts, Ha Ha!! | About the Author snottiegobble bunbury 8th July 2010 4:07pm #UserID: 3468 Posts: 1458 View All snottiegobble's Edible Fruit Trees |

snottiegobble says... Have a look at Australind & Harvey too while youre down this way. Harvey area is the perfect dairy country with rolling green grassy hills & lovely bush & the dam makes a great day out with your family. Kinda makes you lean towards choosing Harvey products once youve been there. | About the Author 11th July 2010 12:17pm #UserID: 0 Posts: View All 's Edible Fruit Trees |
