82eso starts with ... Hi, I'm at Streaky Bay and have shallow sandy soil on limestone, with a coastal aspect. I'd dearly love to plant a feijoa and perhaps espalier it. A fig tree would be great, but the last one died sadly. Any advice on soil preparation, variety I should select, site preference, and maintenance would be loved. | About the Author 82eso Streaky Bay 22nd December 2015 9:39pm #UserID: 12949 Posts: 1 View All 82eso's Edible Fruit Trees |

Tommoz says... You need to know the pH of the soil and the depth too. Limestone usually makes for alkaline soils and sandy soils are low in fertility. You might need to mound your trees. Fig and feijoa both prefer slightly acidic soils but I think they could do fine in your location. I would recommend 'White Adriatic' fig and 'Unique' feijoa. Limestone/karst landscapes are also good for peaches, apricots, all citrus and especially persimmons which love calcium. You would need a low-chill variety of peach or apricot. | About the Author Tommoz Dural 21st January 2016 4:12pm #UserID: 7219 Posts: 340 View All Tommoz's Edible Fruit Trees |
