Ice cream bean tree

I have had an Ice Cream Bean Tree for about two years, it is about 2mts high but has a very spindly trunk and have had to stake it as it can't support its own top weight - is this normal ?

G'day Bill,
Yes, that is 'normal'.
I've been told they are not really suitable for a ¼ acre block, as they grow huge!

My brother has one (on a ¼ acre block), and he's going to keep it pruned to a manageable size, he says. And his is staked too :-)

A friend has given me three seedling trees. Two died, but the recent downpours saw the last one grow mightily. Currently it is in a largish pot. We are on one acre and the garden is fairly developed (not much room left for new stuff, especially if it is going to become a 10' tree!). I am also concerned by the reports that this species can become a weed, spreading all over the garden. So, can I contain its height and spread by keeping it in a pot, and if so, will it go on to develop pods (dying to taste them!)?

Thanks

Eve
