Keranji- Will these grow?

    2 responses

Picked up a kilo of Keranji fruit from the local fruit shop today. The species name is Dialium indum and the fruit are often called Keranji or Velvet Tamarind although they are not related to the Tamarindus tree. The last time I ate these fruit was many years ago in SE Asia where they are considered a delicacy and the experience was like eating candy.

The seeds look very good and fresh so could you please tell me if you think that the seeds from these fruit will grow. Considering that they have been imported, they might not be viable. Thanks for your kind opinion.
Yours cordially.

the plant is in the Fabacea bean family, might need some scarification or warm stratification/incubation as per tropical legumes. Some tropical legumes like ice cream bean have shorter term seed that cant be dried, some others take a while to germinate.

Thanks for your comments. The flesh of the fruit around the seeds is still moist so they don't seem to have dried out and still look fresh. However I have found that other imported fruit are usually irradiated which renders the seeds unviable so that is my main concern with these seeds. Have planted about a dozen and will see what happens.

To be continued.....
