Plant stress, lychee are very sensitive to stress. Check soil for moisture as the pot soil can dry out and i will also suggest a move to semi shade till it recovers. A bit of tonic but not fertiliser can help.

A sudden reaction is likely to be from a sudden change of temperature, light, watering and especially fertiliser application. It could be the fallout of events just prior to its purchase. If insects, fungi or other nasties have suddenly accessed roots it could have the same results.

i have a lychee that regularly drops leaves, it seems to be a pattern of leaf drop when new leaves emerge. Very sensitive plant, put it in a protected area and maybe just wait and see what it does. You can't be heavy handed with a lychee, they are real babies and need things just right. They are very slow growers also. I agree it could have been something that happended before you purchased it. Good luck.
