Mango Trees in Shade

    4 responses

Hi all,
I have recently planted a Nam Doc Mai from Daleys. Unfortunately the only place left that I could fit it does not get full sun all day (direct sunlight between about 8am and 1pm) and the rest of the day it is in the shade of other trees that are 10 meters away (slightly more in summer but not significantly).

I am wondering if it will do well or ever fruit in this location due to the lack of full sun all day.

Does anyone have any first hand experience with this issue?

Thanks all.

Hi Scott,
I have seen mangoes fruit with less direct light. Compared to full sun expect reduced flowering and fruit set, but you should still get lots of fruit once established. If you're in the tropics you're fine, but if you're in a warm temperate zone you might be stuffed.
Good luck,

Hi Scott,
It is all about microclimate. I have seen mangoes fruiting in Tasmania and the south coast highlands of NSW. They like it warm and never dry. The cooler your area is, the sunnier and warmer its position needs to be. If you live in a place where you get heatwaves the afternoon shade your tree gets will be a saving grace. Look at the microclimates around your property and go from there.
