Privacy screen over sewer & water mains

Hi all.

I need an evergreen privacy screen to cover a 10mtr back fenceline & needs to grow 3 to 4 mtr high. Problem is... there is an easement (stormwater + sewerage) that runs along the fenceline, ?? 1mtr in on my side). I'm yet to get the exact location diagram from Sydney Water.

My backyard faces northwest & gets partial sun through most of the day. The west fenceline has alternating Lily Pily Cascade & Michelia figo (Port Wine Magnolia) & a Tibouchina Alstonville soon to be planted in the back corner.

My thoughts are:

1. Black bamboo (invasive I know), planted in polystyrene boxes (as pictured) & sitting on a length of conveyor belt so I can see any rhizome runners that try to escape.

2. Black bamboo in a 600mm deep trench lined with conveyor belt angled outwards to deflect rhizome runners up to the surface.

3. I'd even like a couple of evergreen fruit trees. ? Suitable types.

4. A raised garden bed with any suggestions.

Thanks in advance :)

I would be inclined to grow something edible too, the previous owners planted bamboo along the fence at our place and it is an ongoing nightmare to remove.

Espalier might also be an option but you will need to know where those pipes are and how deep. You could always gently dig down until you find them which will be way more precise than going off plans.

Thanks waterfall.
After having dug out the black bamboo from a friends place so I could use it along the fenceline.... I'm starting to think do I really want the headache it may result in???

I just bought a Service Location diagram from Sydney Water & I think you are correct in suggesting to gently dig to find the pipes. At least I have an idea where they run but no idea how deep.

Maybe only deciduous plants like stone-fruit which won't give you much of a screen in winter.
