Red Passion Flower

Several years ago, I purchased a Purple Passion Vine, the only one I bought. It was growing over a very large bush and my Mom decided to prune the bush way back, but severely cut back the vine, too. It never produced any fruit. Only one small tendril came back, but quickly died. Two years later, another passion vine came up in it's place, but this one has red flowers and instead of the flowers being flat, the pedals bend downwards from the center. I think it's called "Scarlet Flame." In two years, the red vine has not produced any fruit. However, now I have purple passions growing all over the yard. What has caused this phenomenon? (Sorry, no camera, no pic)

I would imagine the grafted material was probably pruned a little hard, perhaps below the graft site itself. It sounds like the rootstock which was originally used to graft the Scarlet Flame cultivar onto has taken over and suckered in your yard.
