Size of raised lemon bed

    5 responses

Ollie starts with ...
I have hard, rocky soil so have decided to build a raised timber bed for a lemon lisbon. Could somebody tell me what size I should make the bed? What length, width and height should it be? I've searched all over the internet and while everyone says raised beds are great for lemons, I can't find anywhere that tells you what size to make the beds.
Thanks.

Well, the short answer is, as large as possible. You'll never make one TOO big.

:D That's true and the place I want to put it is about 10x1.8 metres so I could certainly make it long enough but I'm not sure if 1.8 metres is wide enough for a lisbon.

lol you'll absolutely romp it in at 1.8m. You could fit five citrus trees into something that size if they're on a dwarf rootstock.

The problem with too big raised beds is that weed also loves to grow there.

And i don't know what you're planning to do with hundreds of limes but i would prefer to have some variety in fruit.
So I would plant some oranges or other tree's as well.

My big bed has to be filled all the time since the organic material shrinks fast.

If your soil has big rocks or much stones i would first get them out so the roots finally can grow into the original soil. Your rocky soil will become of a good quality after a while, just let the compost do it's work.
