Strange Soil

Digging up my inner-west backyard for the first time, and finding strange little "rocks" with a gritty white coating. I'm afraid of what might have been dumped in there over the last 100 years. Has anyone seen anything like this in old house gardens - pics attached.

Hi - Looks to me a bit like old coral pieces -- are you close to Ocean? Remember your land could have been below sea level millions of years ago? Just leave for drainage or pick out as you go and make a coral pathway?

Thanks Mark for your interesting theory. However, Sydney's inner-west is about 10km from the ocean, and the 'rocks' are mostly around an old paved area. I'm guessing they grew out of something like coal or concrete or some other fuel or building material.

Hi Sherwood, I'm thinking it looks like waste from a furnace or incinerator. Or maybe unburnt waste from a coal or briquette fireplace ??.
