Hi warren - that's a tough one :( There are not many fruit-vine choices, if your environment is salty? Is the pergola facing into ocean winds, in sunlight all day? etc...

I have a Cassabanana (Sicana odorifera) growing strongly, might have some seed to share if it gets to fruit.

Mine grew well, flowered in its first year and looked like it was going to take over the garage roof.. alas we had a couple of frosts that winter (the first and only ones I've seen here) and I showed Jantina, who originally supplied the precious original three seeds, a mummified vine still clinging to the eastern wall when she visited me here. It had lots of both male and female flowers forming before its demise, and even though it is supposed to be a perennial, it never reshot. I have a white choko in its place now, but hopefully some kind soul will get hold of more seeds - it isn't on the AQIS approved list worse luck

Great - interestingly, two of the three seedlings which germinated had purplish leaves, the initial survivor was totally green.

I hope you meant seeds being thrust UPON you Mike, the mental picture of you having seeds thrust UP you while you feel that you "can't dis-courteously reject" them is a bit painful!

MIke thanks again for sending the Cassabanana seeds via our generous buddy Starling.. between the both of you you've expanded the biodiversity up and down the east coast of Australia, and no doubt out west as well. Much appreciated. Phil.
