Waiting for Spring

    35 responses

Slicko starts with ...
The grapes are pruned and the trellis repaired, the potatoes and the ginger are harvested, the garlic and the peas have been planted, the leaves are dropping on the stone fruit, the carrots and the beetroot are up and the mango tree is just starting to flush, the citrus is testing my patience and my hope for a crop and I am trying low chill apples for the first time. All is ready to go and I am Waiting for Spring.

How is everyone else going with their gardens and orchards?

Hi Ive
Looks like your trees are ahead of mine. No evidence of bud burst on either of two of my stone fruit. The third one has been setting fruit for months (at least 2).
The low chill apples are yet to drop all their leaves but buds are developing and I am hoping I will see some activity soon.
I had 4 lychees at our old home but I couldn't protect them from the fruit bats.
As you are obvioously nearby, I would love to see your garden. My email is mikedotcowieatbigponddotcom and I am in Erminia Court and you are welcome to drop in anytime.

I just sprayed my peaches and nectarines for leaf curl, red tamarillos are almost ripe as are the pandora passionfruit. My B3 lychee is about to flower, buds are swelling on the dwarf black mulberry, everything else is still dormant dormant.

It will be interesting to see what happens now that this recent cold spell has passed.

The All in one Almond just starting to flower.
Avos budding up flowers - stems not formed yet couple months to go.
Nectarines & Peaches swelling not quite yet to bud burst for 2nd spay.
Going to grafting day next weekend to get some scions - Coes golden drop plum i woukd like.

Blueberry Burst are almost 4mm and crop will be huge.
Cherrys flower buds are getting fatter as well as my 8 buds I put on my 13 year old weeping cherry with 5inch trunk half converted fruiting weeper - LOL
Thats it for me for a couple months :)

Most of my deciduous trees haven't woken up yet. I think it will take longer down here as none of them have started to flower yet.

I'm sure it's way too early although they have lots of buds on them like this yellow-fruiting crab apple, "Golden Hornet".

All very exciting. My Tropical Sweet and my Anna apples have come alive. First time with apples so all is new. My stone fruit (except for the plums) have lost their leaves and my mango is now flushing. My grapes are still dormant and my citrus are still to burst into flower.
Things are starting to hot up.

Silverbell Tree just waking up!

This Carolina Silverbell tree (Halesia) in the picture has just got it's first leaf coming out. Would have thought that it's still too early but it's a good sign.

Regarding Halesia carolina it is said that it's four-winged fruits are edible when green in summer with a nice pea flavour and they can also be pickled.

Looking forward to them come Summer!

I built some proper size planter boxes for my citrus espaliers today. Previously they were in 40cm diameter pots with the bottoms cut out but I had a lot of trouble keeping the water up to them last summer and there was no space for thick mulch on top.

Very nice planters there, Waterfall.

I had a visit from the local bushy tailed wildlife last night. Would you believe that it raided my Meyer lemon tree sat on one of my chairs, consumed half a lemon, took all the half grown peaches off my tree ate half of them and then buggered off and raided next door's zucchini patch.

A hasty trip to bunney's today to get the makings for a tree enclosure.

Washington navel showing signs of emergence. One Peachtree in flower, two apples in flower and two Chamboucin grape cuttings emerging. Happy, happy!

I have a couple of BB's. They do fruit well in Brisbane, and the fruit are pretty good. I haven't had any huge sized berries yet, but then again I don't treat mine very well. You need quite a few blueberry bushes to make it worthwhile IMO given how thirsty they are.

I finally got to harvest some tamarillo today, the cool thing is that the branch shown in the photo loaded with fruit actually snapped half way through in a big storm we had almost 3 months ago. I strapped it up to some other branches to take the weight off and managed to ripen all the fruit on it.

Mark, in Europe it's 21/22 September for Autumn, not spring! I was in Scotland in Sept many years ago, and it was damned cold - more like a WA winter!

These dates are arbitrary anyway - Nature doesn't know about dates.

Spring has well and truly arrived in Carindale! Everything is well away except for the grapes which are dragging their heels. Stonefruit is going bonkers and will require heavy thinning. Citrus are coming into what appears will be sensational flower and the bees are enjoying the blossom on the apples.
Certainly the plants are not aware that it is not yet September.

21 june is the longest day of the year in Holland, after that the daytime gets shorter every day, nights get longer.

23 september autumn officially starts (in Holland).

In Oz everything is upside down though, even water which flows into a drain turns the other way then in Europe.

Why would you think the Military would push 1st Sept for spring - or is it more Catholicism that has created the calendar for the seasons - then why is Europe 21st Sept for Fall/Autumn and we have a Military 1st Sept? in Australia? I personally prefer to call 21st September Spring here in Melb :)

Thanks Julie noticed Typo - Plants dont have a calendar - they more notice Warmth and Daylight Length

Julie i examined it while i was in Oz and water really turned the other way into the drain in a sink.

But i forgot which side it was and can't test it since i'm in Bkk now.

It has to do with gravity. In holland it always flows in the same direction.

That's right Julie, it is myth for small scale events anyway, classic examples are low pressure systems ( hurricanes ) rotate counterclockwise while cyclones clockwise. Also it's got to do with the earth's rotation.
