LydiaB starts with ... My mango tree has produced some fruit this year (first time since we moved in a few years ago) even though it is a large and fully established tree. There are not many fruit but certainly better than nothing. Today as I was checking the firmness of the fruit I noticed one of them had a big crack down the side of it (see photo). When I picked it and pulled it apart the crack went all the way to reveal the kernel (see photo) although admittedly I struggled to actually get it out. I saw no evidence of insects. Could this just be bird damage? Or is it something more sinister? I cant see damage on other fruits at this stage.

Clissa says... Seems like the tree might need a heap of fertilizer or particular elements. Another reason for split fruit is excess water or rain after a dry period. I use commercially available organic pelleted fruit tree fertilizer with trace elements in 25kg bags & dose as per bag instructions. I am getting a really good crop from previously neglected trees. I also heavily mulched with horse manure when the drought set in last winter. That helped my trees get through without watering. | About the Author Clissa Pomona, Qld 11th February 2015 5:38am #UserID: 11270 Posts: 4 View All Clissa's Edible Fruit Trees |
