Black Sapote - warm enough?

    2 responses

We have just purchased 20acres of land near Kendall (about 30km south of Port Macquarie and 15km from the ocean) and want to create an orchard containing fruit that strays a little from the mainstream. Looking at some finger limes, kiwis, avocados and would like to try some more tropical varieties such as Black Sapote. We get some frost but maybe I can create a little microclimate against a north facing wall. Does anybody think Black Sapotes can be grown this far south?

Hi Paul,
I have a very vigourous Black Sapote.
It's growing in very poor soil, (fill!) and carries so much fruit that I have to thin them to stop the tree from splitting. We probably get around 5 to 10 frosts a year with no ill effect.
AS with all fruit trees, it does like to be fed and mulched.

By George, that's excellent news. I will certainly give it a try them.
Thanks for the quick reply.
Cheers
