Fruit tree trunk fungis

Wolf Paw starts with ...
I just saw this on a fruit tree and don't know what it is. Its very slimy under the exterior dry layer. Woodpeckers are digging at the trunk. The slim is only at the base of the tree, which is either apple or plumb.
