Pecan Seedlings

Hi. I have a property near Port Macquarie and am wanting to plant fruit tress near our dam. Any recommendations or soil prep? Humid weather and lots of tall gums.
Is the Pecan seedling only a root stock or a pleasant tasting fruit/nut?

Hi Sally

You climate is right for Pecans to grow. Soil prep and location is normal. Situate them in an area where water is not known to pool. They don't like wet feet. They like full sun not under any shade tree. So plant them away from the shadows of the gum tree if possible. Clear the area of weeds as well. Now if you want nuts after 5-10 years, if you are planning to plant seedlings, plant multiple trees so they can cross pollinate later on when they are ready to bear nuts. If you are in a hurry they are known to fruit in less than five years with grafted self fertile varieties like pawnee and tejas. When they are young protect them from domestic and wild animals coz they might munch the entire tree.
