which trees?

Coming from a position of fruit tree ignorance, I seek advice on the following two subjects:
1. I have 2 ornamental pears which provide great shade. I have more space and could get two more ornamental pears but would rather put in two fruit trees with similar growth patterns/shade potential/shape. What might be the obvious choices?
2. I would like to grow two full-size almond trees. I understand that for fruit I need two different types. What might be recommended as best option for Canberra?
Thanks for your patience and support.
sincerely ric

Hi RicTrees,

1. There are many fruit trees for ACT such as Plum, Apple, Pear etc. e.g. add 2 pears Packham and brown Beurre or Feijoas Duffy and Apollo for fruits etc. but they need a hair cut each year to have a similar shape.

2. For Almond - Self Pollinating Papershell. You only need one.
Cheers.

Hi David.
Thanks very much. I was thinking a Packham and a Williams, though i'm a little confused because this website says a Williams will pollinate a Packham, but doesn't specifically confirm the reverse!
You're right, the papershell would be ideal.
Thanks again
Cheers ric

Hi RicTrees,

Most pears are partially self-fertile and they need partner. Both William and Packham need a NIJISSEIKI as a Partner. However without a partner they still give you enough fruits. Don't need to worry.Cheers
