20/07/14 Frost: About My Edible BackyardWhy Feedingtimeatthezoo Love's Edible Plants Biggest challenge is space and shading - 70 sq (horizontal) metres in long-term but rented accommodation. Plants all mostly in pots so soil not relevant but where plants are in-ground the soil is improved loam fill. Annual rainfall, as for outer SE Melbourne. Sheltered yard faces north with some morning and afternoon shade, hot spots near the brick wall of the house. Problems with burning of some plants in high summer so aim eventually to net/shade the entire yard. Neighbour's Japanese elm now getting too tall and providing bit too much shade form all but midsummer sun! Worm-thieving, pot-digging, plant-root-exposing blackbirds are my nemesis! :) ![]() ![]() ![]() Commentsfeedingtimeatthezoo says... Fig - Brown Turkey Feedingtimeatthezoo's Edible FruitsUpdate: 4472 days 19hrs Comments: - Struck from a sucker from a friend's tree around 1993. Took quite a few years to establish. I do nothing to it - water only in the hottest part of summer and has never been fertilised. Fruiting well last few years after a heavy prune to keep it under 2m ... and I now actually GET the fruit since I started netting it from the birds! Lovely fruit when dried.
