11/11/09 Frost: About My Edible BackyardWhy Artamus Love's Edible Plants I am on a 10 HA block 20 kms outside the ACT. I started with a few fruit trees and it has almost become an obscession with me also haunting local markets looking for different fruits that will grow in a cold, low rainfall area on poor soils as well as watching the Daley's website. Started planting where a tap was located for water access but unfortunately probably the worst area as far as soils are concerned. Last winter I bit the bullet and dug up most that were struggling and translocated to the new orchard area and installed new watering system. With a bit of effort I now have over 200 fruit, nut and berry plants including some that need special microclimates to survive here such as Avocado and Macadamias. My biggest problems to date have been kangaroos (solved with a 1.8m fence - about 3000 sq mts enclosed) and cockatoos (still to be solved but well under way - a small winery next door sold up and I got two wool packs of nets - still working out how to join together and get over a 3 metre high wire frame). Just at present I've got a number of hazel trees available. 6247 3341* You need your own My Edibles Page to contribute Quick & Easy |
