About My Edible Backyard

Hello! This is a great site! Please share your thoughts, especially other cool-temperate gardeners...

Us: My wife (and young son) and I bought our house and land in September 2008. There were an old crabapple and nectarine and recent Meyer Lemon and Imperial mandarin. We brought with us Lemon, Makrut Lime, Sunburst Cherry and Bay tree (wedding gifts) in pots and have been buying, propagating and planting new trees steadily since then. We are planting very intensively to fit in all the varieties we want!

Block: 920 square metres (closer to 820 square metres when minus house, garage, driveway) gently sloping down from the road on the east. Neighbours at back and on both sides. Neighbour on north side an older Greek man who previously had a market garden in rural Greece. He has also put in many fruit trees and vegetables. There is a peach tree hanging over the other neighbour's fence. There are lots of old fruit trees in our area, including Malus, Prunus, Pyrus, Crataegus

Soil: poor, sandy, mid-pH, generally hydrophobic, much has been infested with roots of big trees (some now felled), lots of couch, nut-grass etc

Annual rainfall: >1000mm

Temperature: ranges from a few degrees negative to about 40 0C. Last winter we got some pretty heavy frost but we have had big trees felled and our fruit trees are slowly growing so I am interested to see how the landscape and frost change. Our real summer often only starts in January.

Aspect: North facing. Two giant Radiata Pines on western boundary block some late sun (orchard mostly toward the eastern end). Since we felled a few other trees the pines are the only mature trees on the block until our fruit trees grow.

Excellent medicinal and useful product to have in the pantry (makes a great custard)
