04/09/09 Frost: About My Edible BackyardWhy Mygarden Love's Edible Plants we live in a normal suburban backyard with 3 young children. when we first moved in 18 months ago, the back yard consisted of mostly lawn, an old asbestos shed and unkempt gardens with heaps of palm trees. now, half our back yard is taken up by vege garden, chook run and fruit trees. the other half is play equipment and grass area for the children. we are also working on the front yard, taking out palm trees and putting in fruit trees. our aim is to make our yard as productive as possible in the small space we have, while being beautiful, as well as accommodating our active young children. the majority of our fruit trees, citrus, apple, stone fruit, will be planted among the chooks, fairly close together to form a canopy, but they are all still small at the moment. i also plan to plant hardier fruit in the front yard, which wont require so much looking after. our biggest challenges have been working with the extremely clay soil, deciding what to put where, finding local supplies of materials to enrich the soil without costing a fortune, and finding the time to do it all! But we love working in the garden and find it very rewarding, especially when we are rewarded with our own produce, and the children see first hand how and where food comes from.
