Grant starts with ... I've heard somewhere that putting vaseline on the trunk of the plant is a good way to go when trying to combat ants. Has anyone tried it? Does the tree need to be of a certain size for the petroleum jelly not to adversely affect the plant? I have scale issues on my little blueberries, and the ants seem to be up to mischief on my fig as well. | About the Author Grant Lennox Head 27th December 2012 9:20pm #UserID: 6119 Posts: 156 View All Grant's Edible Fruit Trees |

John Mc says... Just backing up Jenny there. Don't apply vasoline directly to the trunk, Put a barrier between the live trunk and the vasoline. Electrical tape works well, start from the bottom and overlap on your your way up. Whatever you use, keep a regular eye on it, you don't want to strangle the tree for the sake of a few ants. Don't be too quick to install ant bariers either. Some plants produce sap from special points up near the flowers to encourage ants into the canopy for pollination. | About the Author JohnMc1 27th December 2012 10:13pm #UserID: 2743 Posts: 2043 View All JohnMc1's Edible Fruit Trees |
amanda says... I agree John Mc - remember way back when I put vasoline straight on the trunks of my trees (read about it on another forum) eventually it made the trunks go really weird (didn't kill the trees tho) it was only one application too... :-( Here is the link to my pics: https://www.daleysfruit.com.au/forum/vaseline-on-tree-trunks/?PHPSESSID=e8cea40d3b9547e052bcd82abed35cf0 | About the Author amanda19 Leschenault (160kms south of Perth) 28th December 2012 11:15am #UserID: 2309 Posts: 4607 View All amanda19's Edible Fruit Trees |
