Noob gardener starts with ... Hi, I've been looking at getting a mango tree recently and was after some advice. With the Dwarf Mango varieties, how extensive is their root system (how far do they need from structures, roads or other surfaces). Also, I have been reading that many have success in growing them in colder areas. I live in Busselton, WA (near Margaret River) and have an open front yard. I would be planting it central to catch the Winter sun over our roof, would this be a succesful position? I was also thinking about laying down some decorative bush rocks nearby to absorb and redirect heat to protect it from frost. Figbarron says... Im in victoria which is colder than you i believe? Im growing a Kensignton pride seedling and a grafted dwarf irwin from Daleys. The dwarf irwin produced flowers the first year (few months ago)and i am now waiting new growth. The kensington pride flushed new growth and both are growing in pots. The root system is not too extensive per se. Grafted ones have a much less vigorous root system compared to seedlings but i have had no issues with my kensignton pride seedling. The dwarf irwin is suited for pots, so if you are concerned about plumbing and sensitive structures you can just grow it in a pot.
