I've got growing happily up in Maleny (hinterland): mandarin; lime; coffee; tea (camellia senensis; persimmon; black sapote; mulberry; paw paw. And bushes (blueberry (misty); dragon fruit; and passionfruit; and ...
LOTS grow in the hinterland as it is warm but also not too hot and also cooler in winter though not too cold(so a range of fruit trees from the tropical to the temperate can be grown - though avoid ones that need a frost unless your friend lives in a place with frost); has good deep soil (so avocado is great); has good rainfall (so trees are happy!); has lots of sunny days. generally plants are happy to be here (though be careful - plants also tend to grow much faster and also much bigger - so think of the space it is going to be planted in).
