Fruitylicious1 says... Hi Sanjesh, I don't think Inocarpus Fagifer will thrive in Logan Central, Qld. Tahitian chesnut is uber tropical tree. If you live in Far North Queensland you will have a chance to grow it. The reason why it's not widely cultivated in OZ because seed viability is very short (few weeks) and does not tolerate dessication (drying). Anyway, if you are trying to import the seeds to OZ check first the AQIS website for applicable rules and regulations. There is a strong chance that it may be allowed because it is a non-invasive species. But then again, you must check importation laws to avoid disappointments. denise1 says... In the late 1970s I bought some of these nuts in an Auckland fruit shop. Only one was in good shape to grow as they are usually butchered open with a machete or chopper leaving them damaged. It was probably one to two weeks old from harvesting. Unfortunately the butchering is often done onto the buttress roots of the tree and can cause damage to the tree. The seed grew rapidly for me until about 40cms until the cool climate took it, Anyway the lesson is that an intact seed should survive a time similar to the time taken by international mail if you intend importing them. I wonder if FruitLovers in Hawaii can find some for you. I must add that it is an extremely attractive tree. | About the Author denise1 auckland NZ 22nd March 2018 4:46pm #UserID: 6832 Posts: 688 View All denise1's Edible Fruit Trees |

Sanjesh says... Hi, Thank you kindly for your messages. I am hopeful of contacting someone who might grow these trees in far North Qld or NT as I understand some studies have been undertaken in Australia regarding these plants but I have no idea who I can contact to obtain a seedling. Any further assistance anyone can give me regarding potential contacts will be much appreciated. Thanks everyone. Fruitylicious1 says... Hi Sanjesh Just and idea, try contacting Cairns and Darwin Botanic Gardens. They might have it (Tahitian Chesnut) in their massive collection of tropical plants or if not, they might know someone who have has it in his or her private collection. There are a lot of volunteer workers in those Botanic gardens who are keen gardeners and plant collectors as well. They might lead you to something worth chasing.
