lshumsky starts with ... This is my dwarf meter's first winter, and I'm not really sure how to care for it. The leaves have started to turn yellow, and I'm not sure what deficiency is associated with this pattern? The tree is about 1.5 metres tall. Help!

amanda says... Hey Ishumsky and Julie - I asked on another forum and Nitrogen deficiency came up..? When there is a sudden drop in nitrogen OR there is girdling of a trunk (eg collar rot maybe?) or branch - then vein chlorosis can occur also..? Not sure what's on the other side of that fence in the pic (neighbours..?) maybe check they haven't sprayed on the other side lately? Have you put any new mulch or anything high carbon in/on the soil and not fed the tree? (nitrogen draw down) And - have you fed the tree since u planted it..? (and what have u fed it?) | About the Author amanda19 Geraldton. 400km north of Perth. 6th June 2012 9:42pm #UserID: 2309 Posts: 4607 View All amanda19's Edible Fruit Trees |

lshumsky says... I haven't noticed any collar or branch rot. Other than the few yellow leaves, the tree looks OK. Good idea - I will check with the neighbours. I was thinking it might be a lack of nitrogen too. I haven't fertilised in a few months, am probably due, although I'm not 100% clear of how often I should fertilise. I have read all sorts of advice. Should you fertilise in the winter? The last time I would have done it would have been late summer. (Feb-March?) In Feb-March, I would have put a slow release citrus fertiliser in with the soil and I occasionally spray it with Miracle Grow. | About the Author Lshum Western Australia 6th June 2012 10:05pm #UserID: 5612 Posts: 7 View All Lshum's Edible Fruit Trees |
