Lee Gardner starts with ... Hi All, all i can say is that i wish i knew about fruit flies 3 months ago. I have a nectarine tree thats about 1 year old. I would say it has about 200 nectarine on it. all of the ones i have picked so far have had maggots inside. and now they are randomly falling off the tree by the bucket full every day. Unfortunately the local possum has taken i liking to the fruit on the floor. my question is when should i start using the fruit fly traps next year?, are my orange, Lemon and lime trees going to be the same? and is there any way of keeping the possums from getting into the tree without netting the tree? I have put out a fruit fly trap now but i assume all the fruit will be bad, is there any tell tale signs i can look for to maybe save some of this years crop? Wayne says... Hi Lee Doesn't that p-- you when you loose your crop like that, I don't know at what stage your fruit are but spray them with Lebaycid to kill the rest of the grubs and do it weekly with a wetting agent. You need to hit them with a systemic spray to try and salvage something. It will have a 7 day withholding period but what the hell. If your lemons are Lisbon or Eureka the fruit fly won't worry them, a different story for Lisbon or lots-a-lemons [same thing actually] The fly won't touch the limes but I'm not sure about the Oranges, I doubt if they would go for a Naval orange. I have a blood orange and they don't touch that You can buy a possum trap for about $70 from Bunnings or a Rural Agent or hire one from the Council for about $10 a week. When you set it use gloves to handle the fruit bait to keep your smell away. Failing that get a dog or a gun [just kidding] Have fun | About the Author Wayne Mackay QLD 3rd November 2010 6:54pm #UserID: 338 Posts: 908 View All Wayne's Edible Fruit Trees |

Lee Gardner says... Thanks for the tips guys, Unfortunately the fruit fly did its damage and the possum did the rest, i dont have a single nectarine left. oh well at least i know for next year. i am going to spray my oranges and lemons just incase, beleive it or not the fruit fly got my tomatoes as well. A bit off topic but does anyone know if potatoes will survive after a possum has eaten all the leaves off the plant? They have been in the ground about 5 weeks and were going great Regards Lee Gardner | About the Author Lee Gardner Brisbane 11th November 2010 3:23pm #UserID: 3766 Posts: 11 View All Lee Gardner's Edible Fruit Trees |
Julie says... Lee, my spuds weren't damaged by possums, but the leaves were eaten almost overnight by caterpillars. I did spray Dipel, but too late. That was it, no new leaves and they died. I thought I would get nothing, had a poke this morning and found a few medium and small spuds. They had been in since August. I guess it's possible yours could reshoot, after only five weeks in the ground. Leave it a while and see what happens. | About the Author Julie Roleystone WA 11th November 2010 8:01pm #UserID: 154 Posts: 1842 View All Julie's Edible Fruit Trees |
