Gumnut starts with ... Hi All, Went to three nuresrys around my area today chasing a White Deco self watering pot to no joy, anyway the three we went to the plants are not looked after, theres heaps of random plants dying some that have heaps of weeds in the bag/pot there in, some were the rootstock has about 3 plus branches forming and going strongly and i dont mean 3inch branches i mean 6 plus inches. There were trees/plants like apples that had fallen over and could see that they have been down for awhile and havnt been picked up. Other customers think im wierd when they see me pulling weeds out and picking up fallen plants and when i speak to the staff to let them know that the rootstock on some plants need to be removed or just to let them know they snub me tell me that it will get sold soon so dont worry about it :( should say grrrrrrrrr but anyway i tryed, the only time they jump is when i tell them there plants are getting smashed by something and the bugs are there to stay and effect more plants. Anyway thats my whinge just dont like seeing a dirty messy non maintained nursery. The three were terrible, the local Bunnings was better looked after than the nurserys. | About the Author Gumnut Newcastle NSW 15th December 2012 3:49pm #UserID: 7328 Posts: 60 View All Gumnut's Edible Fruit Trees |

Phil@Tyalgum says... Often the menial jobs are those of the apprentice nurserymen, but a lot of privately owned businesses can't afford to put them on these days, they are losing out to the big stores like Bunnings. These young kids start off weeding and doing general maintenance, seems like a lot of the older nurseries are doomed to close down.

Pauline says... Many nurseries are struggling to firstly find well trained staff, and secondly to afford them. There just isn't the same customer base out there as there was 3-4 years ago. If you don't like the way a nursery is run then shop somewhere else. In times like these only the better ones will survive. | About the Author Pauline Adelaide 16th December 2012 1:12pm #UserID: 1532 Posts: 293 View All Pauline's Edible Fruit Trees |

MaryT says... Every backyard used to have one or more fruit trees. I think the trend is coming back. The church around the corner has dedicated one side of its grounds to a row of citrus and vegetable garden and the front a herb garden on one side and more fruit trees on the other. The children across the street have started a vegetable patch and one of them is 'apprenticed' to me. She comes here and work for two hours a week from 8 - 10 every Saturday morning. | About the Author MaryT Sydney 18th December 2012 7:25am #UserID: 5412 Posts: 2066 View All MaryT's Edible Fruit Trees |
