Violet_Cactus starts with ... Oyster-leaf (Mertensia maritima) "Oysterleaf can be found growing wild on the coast of Scotland. Its fleshy leaves are rich in a flavour, which is comparable to oysters, anchovies, mushrooms and borage." Anyone growing this in Australia? I'd love to try it in my garden. | About the Author VioletCactus1 Melbourne 28th February 2010 8:32pm #UserID: 516 Posts: 349 View All VioletCactus1's Edible Fruit Trees |

John Mc says... Hi Julie, Here is a link to it http://www.herbsarespecial.com.au/free-herb-information/mushroom-plant.html I've read of so many restrictions posting to WA. I assume these are on the restricted list like everything else. Otherwise I'd be more than happy to send you some cuttings. You might have to move over here.

JUJUBE FOR SALE IN MELBOURNE says... Hi John, Yes, it is very true that. Vap ca tastes and smell like fish. I love fish but dislike this herb. Some people like them in rice paper roll or salad but not for me. In VN they crush the leaves and throw it in the river to persuade fish to come. I asked people who don't eat much fish but eat this herb very often. They said they get used to eat them after a while (initially, they hate those flavour). Apparently, they are very good for you. Would you like some? I can send to you. | About the Author JUJUBE FOR SALE Melbourne 3rd March 2010 8:41am #UserID: 2706 Posts: 715 View All JUJUBE FOR SALE's Edible Fruit Trees |

Julie says... I'm getting really fed up with the WA quarantine restrictions. They ban the importation of the most innocuous plants.I understand the soil issue, but even bare-rooted plants are not allowed. Thank heavens a lot of interesting food plants can be grown from seed - though there are a lot of restrictions on many of these too. | About the Author Roleystone WA 3rd March 2010 8:07pm #UserID: 0 Posts: View All 's Edible Fruit Trees |

John Mc says... Hi JUJUBE FOR SALE IN MELBOURNE thank you for that kind offer. I might have a friend comming up from Melbourne about the time your Jujube's will be ready for sale. If the timing's right, is it possible for them to pick the Jujube's up personally? and maybe a cutting of that fish plant? Apparently, she doesn't live too far from you. | About the Author John Mc1 Warnervale NSW 3rd March 2010 9:13pm #UserID: 3373 Posts: 72 View All John Mc1's Edible Fruit Trees |

Violet_Cactus says... The Vap Ca plant is quite pretty, especially when it flowers. Julie, I feel your pain even though I live in Melbourne. For me it's the frustration of looking at lovely fruiting plants on overseas nursery websites and knowing we can't get them here in Oz. It must be ten times worse for you in WA. | About the Author VioletCactus1 Melbourne 4th March 2010 10:14pm #UserID: 516 Posts: 349 View All VioletCactus1's Edible Fruit Trees |

Violet_Cactus says... Speedy, that Vietnamese dish you mentioned has its own Facebook Page. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Goi-Cuon-Tom-Thit/30874550189 Here's a recipe, but I assume they substituted basil for vap ca: Vietnamese Salad Roll (Goi Cuon Tom Thit) Ingredients: 2 oz. rice vermicelli 8 large (8.5-inch) rice wrappers 8 large cooked shrimp, peeled, deveined and cut in half 11/3 tbsps. chopped fresh Thai basil 3 tbsps. chopped fresh mint leaves 3 tbsps. chopped fresh coriander 2 leaves lettuce, chopped 3 tbsps. hoisin sauce 1 tbsp. peanut butter 1 tsp. Spiracha chili sauce 1 tsp. finely chopped peanuts Bring a medium saucepan of water to boil. Boil rice vermicelli 3 to 5 minutes or until al dente; drain. Fill a large bowl with warm water. Dip one wrapper into the hot water for 1 second to soften. Lay wrapper flat. In a row across the centre, place 2 shrimp halves, a handful of vermicelli, basil, mint, coriander and lettuce, leaving about 2 inches uncovered on each side. Fold uncovered sides inward, then tightly roll the wrapper, beginning at the end with the lettuce. Repeat with remaining ingredients. In another small bowl, mix hoisin sauce, peanut butter, chili sauce and peanuts. Serve rolls with the hoisin sauce mixture. Makes 8 rolls. © (c) CanWest MediaWorks Publications Inc. | About the Author VioletCactus1 Melbourne 4th March 2010 11:56pm #UserID: 516 Posts: 349 View All VioletCactus1's Edible Fruit Trees |

JUJUBE FOR SALE IN MELBOURNE says... Thanks Violet, very good one indeed. You could subtitute cooked shrimps with left over meat or shop bought roast Chicken, just shreadd or slice the meat, the name then should be changed to 'Goi Cuon Thit'. 'Thit' means meat, 'Tom' means prawn or shrimp. Traditionally, boiled, sliced pork belly as one of the main ingredient. BTW, you could add Giap ca as an additional herb if you like. Normally, a plate of mixed fresh herbs is served on the table and people pick their own choice of herbs to make their own rolls. speedy says... I like the BBQ pork AND prawn. when I make them at home I serve as roll your own at the table for adults, but i make them up myself for the kid. Oh, and Sweet chilli rather than Sriracha sauce for the kids. very fine shredded lettuce , and a bit of shedded or julienne carot is good. a few Garlic chives leaves are a nice addition also. they look nice as 'tails' emerging from one end of the rolls I think they're the perfect light meal for hot weather. energizing , refreshing and satisfying. | About the Author vic 5th March 2010 9:22am #UserID: 0 Posts: View All 's Edible Fruit Trees |
