Linton starts with ... Picked up some tasty Tampoi fruits from the market recently. Very juicy, sweet and flavoursome. The only downside is that it's impossible to eat all of the slippery sweet flesh as it's stuck to the large seeds. I guess that they were brought down to Melbourne from up north so they are probably too tropical to grow here. However I would be interested to hear if anyone is growing Tampoi in temperate or even subtropical regions, maybe in NSW? Need to decide if its worth the trouble to plant the seeds or if it would just be a waste of time. Thank you.

nossojardim says... I recently came across this delicious fruit in Melbourne too! To my palate, it's very reminiscent of mangosteen and rambutan, but with more acid, which I prefer. They're at Preston market for roughly $3.00 each ($40/kg), if any locals are interested. There's not a lot of information available on their cultivation, but according to one source they may be found at elevations as high as 1600m in Borneo, suggesting to me that there could be a chance they'll work out in Melbourne. On another forum someone suggests they'll survive a frost after year 3. I'll be propagating the seeds in Spring. The plants are dioecious, so I'll be trying to raise as many as I can so I have at least one male and one female. http://tropical.theferns.info/viewtropical.php?id=Baccaurea+macrocarpa | About the Author nossojardim COBURG NORTH,3058,VIC 12th June 2020 9:21am #UserID: 21216 Posts: 7 View All nossojardim's Edible Fruit Trees |
