About My Edible Backyard

Why Ru Love's Edible Plants

We have a 'biggish backyard in town'. Not enough for "self-sufficiency"  but I am aiming to grow "a year of food" (as in, some fruit and some veg coming in year round). I had a great, rural childhood and want to recreate that good food and sense of connectedness to natural seasons and cycles for my two small kids.

My biggest challenges are the heavy clay soil, westerly aspect and getting the time. The greatest rewards have been hearing my three year old tell me what each flower is going to 'turn into' and sitting out the back eating the first mandarines together, fresh off the tree.

No idea of the variety. An elderly neighbour gave me a seedling from his and it fruited well. Currently have two vines self seeded from that one which is now on its way out.

Allegedly dwarf, now pollarded so we can get a net over it to keep birds from spreading the unfortunately very viable seed. Fruits prolifically, but if we like the taste of the shahtoot this one will come out.

Accidentally almost ringbarked, twice, and recovered but trunk quite scarred so we'll see how it goes - it's putting on a good show.

There's a lovely Leuning poem about a man and his lemon tree... this one has just been cut back after going nuts last year

Mulberry - White Shahtoot 10/10

This was bought partly to replace a beautiful white cedar shade tree we removed because of its poisonous berries. Pruning is more to create a strong 'climbable' frame for the kids. Other than that, maintenance is zero. It grew like mad last wet summer, and I hesitated too long before cutting it back, but it has fruit set on every new season's shoot.
