About My Edible Backyard

Why Mick1 Love's Edible Plants

I started this garden in 2009, and it's being designed according to permaculture principles. I am blogging about the garden at Backyard Permaculture.

Keriberry - I understand it has massive weed potential in Victoria - better check that out. There are lots of other bramble berries that are probably more suited down there...3373 days 16hrs
Wine barrels how to make them last - At my place there was an old barrel with soil in it but it was in serious disrepair (not even close to waterproof). I emptied it out, lined the sides (not the bottom, just the sides) with black plastic, and potted a fig in it. The fig is a couple of metre..3385 days 15hrs
Raspberry6 - Hi Diana, It looks like your raspberries are getting attacked by grasshoppers too? I'm in Brisbane, and I've got little grasshoppers everywhere, but they seem to particularly munch on the leaves of the raspberries. Cheers, Mick..3437 days 13hrs
Raspberry6 - Most definitely - but you need to grow the appropriate ones. The autumn-fruiting varieties (including Heritage) will grow in warm climates; they should be pruned right down to ground level in the winter and they will do fine without much chill...3441 days 13hrs
Blueberry - Steph, I also ordered the Ebay blueberries from shanesmagicland/Baxter Berentai - never received them, got no response to email, and he is no longer an ebay member. I found his facebook profile but no other way to contact him - doesn't seem to be l..3493 days 13hrs
Grape vines - Correction to that - it's finally raining!..3528 days 3hrs
Grape vines - No, it doesn't rain in Brisbane any more so no mildew problems :)..3528 days 16hrs
Azomite - Very hard to find impartial comments on the web about this stuff. When they go quoting people who say their vegetables grew so big and fast that the grower asked how to stop them, I get somewhat skeptical!!! There was something from the 90's where som..3533 days 13hrs
Custard apples - Ellen, black sapote is not over-rated IMHO, but it doesn't do much on its own. Even a very small amount of dairy product such as ice cream completely transforms it. Apparently rum has a very positive effect too...3535 days 10hrs
Avacado2 - I felled a large golden cane palm, and the trunk swung around and dropped straight on top of my very-healthy Reed avocado! It's got some new shoots now, but I lost the whole top of it including all the leaves...3555 days 3hrs
Daleys - I agree - great plants! I recently bought some plants elsewhere by mail order that were simply not ready; the Daleys plants have been brilliant...3568 days 4hrs
