About My Edible Backyard

We live in a seaside suburb of Brighton, Queensland.

We grow subtropical fruit trees on a suburban block of 754 sq meters. 

We begun in late 2010, with a variety of dwarf fruit trees.

We planted rainforest trees in shady side of the house. 

Our soil type varies with areas of clay, loam and sandy soil. 

Our aspect is west with the rear fence exposed to the afternoon sun.

I really like the ornamental style of the branches and the taste of the fruit. I got this variety as it is dwarf size.

Dwarf Coffee - Red Catuai (Seedling) ^10/10

Comments: -

I hope to use the beans to make our own coffee eventually. I initially planted these trees at the back of our property which had a lot of clay and only managed to water them once a month and as a result their growth was slow. I decided to transplant them to along side the house improve the soil by adding peat moss and lots of mulch and where i could regularly water them. They have increased in size x5 in the last 6 months. 

In April this year the tree began to fruit bright red coffee cherries, i picked these squeezed the green beans and soaked them in water for 2 days. i poped these beans into a mesh bag rubbed them to remove the membrane.  Then put  the beans onto paper kitchen towel sitting on a baking rack. Over the period of a couple of days the beans dry out, cracks form at the top so that the white parchment starts to spilt. The  parchment layer can be picked off to reveal the green bean. I have stock piling  these green bean til i  have enough 500 grams to trial roasting with pop corn machine. i will attach images.

Comments: -

I love the large felty leaves of the tamarillo. I found due to its thirsty nature that it was a useful indicator for wateing the rest of my potted plants prior to planting them out -if i saw the tamarillo wilt then i knew the rest of the plants also needed a drink. Our local mushroom grower uses Tamarillos as a sun shield for establishing a garden bed (here in queensland) especially for young seedlings. Now that i am famliar with canopy which the tamarillo generates i will definitely use his tip for the rest of my garden.

Question:

I was a bit concerned that my tree appeared to be dormiant but after reading the other gardening entries i have realised that others have experienced similar periods of non growth. This morning i have noticed new shoot so i am encouraged that the spring will bring on new growth as long as i can keep the water up to it.

Comments: - I use this mint in a savoury dish Caponata60ml olive oil1 onion, finely diced1 clove of garlic finely diced1 stalk of celery finely diced1 red capsicum, seeded and finely diced300ml vegetable oil1 eggplant finely cubed100ml vinegar2 tblsp black olives,pitted and chopped2 tblsp pine nuts, toasted and chopped 2 tblspn currents1 dsp sugar1/2 cup finely chopped flat leaf parsley 1/2 cup finelychopped chocolate mintsea saltfresh ground pepper Method Heat the olive oil and fry the onion and garlic until translucent. Add the celery and fry until it begins to soften, then add the capsicum and cook until tender. Transfer to a large bowl. Heat the vegetable oil in a separate pan and fry the eggplant until golden. Transfer to the bowl and stir.Add in vinegar, olives pinenuts, currents,sugar, mint, parsley, season with salt and pepper and toss well. Cover and allow to marinate for a few hours before serving.
