30/04/15 Frost: About My Edible BackyardWhy Bizibee Love's Edible Plants I'm on a large corner block which is north and west facing and the house was getting very hot in summer and I neede trees that would provide shade in summer and let the sun in in winter, and having three young children, what better than fruit trees, that they can go out and pick and eat. My trees are still very young but are producing a few fruits. I am a novice at all this but I love the challenge. I have had afew failures and a few triumphs. Now I am expanding and trying new ideas. I set up a green house to try tropical fruit, I also have a patch in the back that only get morning sun and is shady most of the day and I want to create a tropical feel. My soil is mainly clay and that is very hard to overcome. We get alot of rain mainly in winter but very dry hot summers. My main dissapointment is that I can't get my camelia sinensis to take off, which I would really love and my citrus trees aren't doing as well as I like. Avocado 10/10Bizibee's Edible FruitsUpdate: 4757 days 7hrs Comments: - I grew this tree from seed 15 years ago while I was living in Sydney. When I moved back to Melbourne I brought it with me. It ended up dying of, I was so dissapointed. I left it in its the pot (it was over a metre high) and forgot about it. About a year later I went to clean the area behind the shed, I noticed that my avocado tree sprouted again. It had 40cm shoot coming out the bottom. I left it in the pot for a few years and then two years ago I decided to plant it in the grown and it just took off. Now it is over 2 metres high and very bushy, lush and green (no fruit yet). I just water and fertilize it now and again in summer and thats all. If it never produces fruit it doesn't worry me, I just love the look of it. I understand that you need two to cross pollinate and I don't know if this one is a male or female. My kids and I love pistachios and would love to find a piastachio tree that is double grafted with male and female. I have limited space to plant two trees. Any ideas?
