About My Edible Backyard

Why Harvest Love's Edible Plants

Clarence Town is located on the Williams River. In times past it was the last point for river navigation in this region. Construction of a barrage at Seaham now blocks access to ocean.

Still some commercial rural enterpises however many farms have been sub divided into small acreage lots.

Our retirement home is a clear canvas consisting a backyard on a quarter acre allotment. Every shovel dug contains a rock although soil is rich dark loam with a clay base at 200mm.

Large shed shelters the east however trees planted will obtain good sunlight exposure from the north. 1.5m colorbond fencing provides protection from  prevailing winds.

Summer temperatures can exceed 40 Celcius, we are on town water and intend installing drip irrigation fed from the rainwater tank on the shed. Winter minimum temperatures can reach zero.

Citrus grows well in his district, no commercial plantings. Stone fruits are going to be an experiment dont appear to have attracted the local backyard gardeners although there are commercial plantings 20Km to the east of us.

Time spent in Far NQ attracts me to the tropical varieties will be interesting to observe the survival rates of the species we have chosen.

Intent is to try growing  berries and a grape vine as we are not far from the Hunter Valley Vineyards.

Overall everything will be an experiment with the goal to have as much variety in fruit tree and vine selections as possible.
