Jason says... -3 is nothing for most Avocados, Hass might be damaged but it won't trouble Bacon which will go to about -5c. You should be warm enough in NSW to get Bacon (and the other Type B avocados) to pollinate well. Ettinger is one to try if you get really cold (it will take about -8c). The type A Avocados like Hass are much better in cool climates that are frost free but they often are not able to go much below zero. Hass and Gwen are the best choice for coastal Victoria. Outside inner Melbourne the overnight temps are not warm enough to pollinate type B Avocados well. In Glowinski's book he mentions success with Bacon but outside the city where the nights are cooler it's not that great, Hass will outfruit it 10 to 1 on the same size tree | About the Author 29th October 2008 4:43pm #UserID: 0 Posts: View All 's Edible Fruit Trees |

Jason says... Jantina sorry I missed that message, I've had a busy week I'll email you in a minute so I wont miss next time. Sean, All the Mexican style Avocados ripen between October/November and January in South VIC and can hang untill Feb, Ettinger is one of he last Mexicans to ripen. Not that my Ettinger trees do much in the way of fruit but it's had a few over the years. I don't think I have warm enough nights to suit any of the type B's I only get heavy fruit set on the type A's. Hass/Gwen/Reed and friends will ripen just before Winter and will hang right through Winter into Late Spring or so. Ettinger is a fairly large avocado, it'll be about 1.5 times the size of a decent Hass when it's ripe | About the Author Portland, VIC 5th November 2008 1:19am #UserID: 0 Posts: View All 's Edible Fruit Trees |

Sean says... Thanks for that Jason, looks like I might still have a bit of a wait then. Every thing at my place seems to ripen about 3 weeks later than down in the valley because I am a bit up in the hills.I thought Ettinger Fruit were a bit more elongated than, but yours looks fairly fat (which looks geat) Sean | About the Author Gippsland Victoria 6th November 2008 9:41pm #UserID: 0 Posts: View All 's Edible Fruit Trees |
