This tree sprang to life in our back yard over the last 2 months. It is heavily laden now with what appears to be small stone fruit. Does anyone recognise what it might be?

Could you please help identify the tree pictured. It bears cream coloured, cherry sized, sour tasting fruit that have a single seed inside. It's been in my orchard for around 25 years.
Cheers,

Ben

Hi Ben,

I'm sure it's Star Gooseberry. Daley's sell them too. They're also nice if you caremelise it.

Yes, it is a star gooseberry. It is normally used as caramelised treats during Chinese New Year or pickled. They are really sour if eaten raw, however can be eaten with some salt and pepper.

Many thanks for identifying the Star Gooseberry - have now made a batch of jelly which tastes great - not at all sour like the raw fruit.
