Hi,
I'm interested in hearing where people are growing the Secondo avocado, and how successful it has been. Has it thrived or died?

Thanks
Rhys

We have a very healthy plant, about 2 1/2 metres high and at least 2 wide. Planted about 3 years ago it has survived and thrived through three winters and the very extreme 2008-2009 summer here. 'Here' is Tocumwal, on the Murray River in NSW, on the border with Victoria. We also planted a bacon at the same time. The bacon is healthy and we are happy with it, but the secondo is much more vigorous. The secondo is planted just at the dripline edge of the protecting mandarin tree, and between neighbouring house and our carport and then our house, so it is as protected as can be in the open. We are also pretty close to the river and forest, which I suspect makes us very slightly milder than some of our neighbours on the plains. For the first winter I wrapped it up each night in bubble wrap. For the second winter I put a 'cap' across the top of it when frosts were forecast. It is planted into sand (river sand dune) with 70 years or more of garden material and our own compost and dynamic lifter etc worked in. It has been well mulched with pea straw. good luck with your avo's.

Anyone else with a Secondo? They seem to sell out pretty quickly when they are available so i wouldv'e thought there'd be quite a few out there. There aren't heaps on the my edible page either so maybe there aren't as many around as i thought?

Hi Rhys,
Yeah, go for it I reckon. Avocados wil be $8 each soon! (I've already paid $4.95 for a large Sharwill)
Because I'm in clay, I always grow my avocados on a mound. Search 'Anthracnose Avocados' in this forum, and find photo of my 'Edranol', and it's still going well.
If you're in sandy soil, just dig in lots of composted cow manure (eg Moo Poo), and some gypsum, in a circle ~ 1.5 metres diameter, then plant the tree.
Good luck!
