01/01/24 Frost: About My Edible BackyardWhy Diana Love's Edible Plants We moved into this suburban Brisbane house in early 2008. We have dug up most lawn, which is on heavy clay. I am making a screen of fruit trees around the front, as there is no fence. It's so nice to look at productive gardens beds with areas of shade rather than an exposed expanse of grass. Grape - Carolina Black Rose 10/10 Diana's Edible FruitsUpdate: 1948 days 22hrs Comments: - A fantastic shade plant, it looks beautiful. Does not go dormant until early August, and only for a month. About 15 bunches of grapes in it's first year, 30 second year, only six in its third year. I also have a Maroo seedless on an archway, which fruits about three weeks earlier than the Carolina Black Rose. Maroo seedless is sweet, Carolina Black Rose is quite sour. Kei Apple 10/10 Diana's Edible FruitsUpdate: 1948 days 22hrs Comments: - Seven in a hedge. The spines are huge! Fruited first December 2011. Fruit is impossible to see until it turns orange and soon after, drops off the plant. The fruit is surprisingly aromatic and quite tart. I stewed some with sugar, and made some into chutney. All fruit in bunch went yellow almost overnight (16 kg at once, then one about 40kg with >200 fruit at once the next time). Fruit are very sweet and stringless, and they don't go brown in air. I think I have to plant new ones after this season of third generation suckers, though. Apple - Dorsett Golden (Grafted) Diana's Edible FruitsUpdate: 4619 days 19hrs Comments: - Espalier with a row along the fence of dorsett golden, dwarf anna, rome beauty, granny smith, sundowner, pink lady, huonville crab, bonza, and ballerina bolero. The sundowner, pink lady, huonville crab, and ballerina bolero were planted in 2011, granny smith and sundowner in 2010 and bonza 2012. Lots of flowers and frit on the granny smith and anna. Cape Gooseberry Diana's Edible FruitsUpdate: 4866 days 16hrs Comments: - Volunteer from under compost bin. This plant is attacked by three striped beetle every year, but bounces back and fruits well for long periods of the year despite this. The fruit is really nice, slightly tart. African yam (heart shaped leaves) is also a volunteer from the compost. This yam tastes nice grated and washed in lemon juice water, but oozes slime when cut, like a lamprey. Avocado - Secondo ® (A) Diana's Edible FruitsUpdate: 4866 days 16hrs Comments: - Just planted. I delayed getting one, as only half the family likes avocadoes and we have clay soil. I have planted it on a mound on a built-up bed on a slope, so I hope that works. I like the idea that you can harvest at any size and they ripen off the plant. Also, you can use the leaves. The perfume and taste is lovely, and the flowers attract a lot of bees. No fruit fly or any other problems other than having to prune often to keep it in check. Do they die and come back again? I am in melbourne and wonder if they would survive the winter. I am growing 6 creepers as groundcover around my growing golden sheen trees. Do you use the leaves?
