Jim says... Hi Andy, this question is probably best answered by other avocado growers in the Melbourne area but here is my two bobs. You will still get fruit with the one but may get more with a type A to go with it. The size will depend partly on the rootstock and other factors, but you can always prune it or keep it in a pot to keep it small if that is your goal. | About the Author electra Fremantle 30th August 2011 4:02pm #UserID: 3242 Posts: 112 View All electra's Edible Fruit Trees |

Jason says... Andy, well how big it gets depends on how much time you have. It'll probably be 4 meters in 12-15 years time, but might end up double that height. Like Jim said you will get fruit with just the Bacon, but if you have room and don't have frosts I'd get a Hass to go with it, not just because it's a type A but because it will set more fruit in general and have fruit ripe in the Autumn and Winter rather than Late spring/Summer like Bacon | About the Author Jason Portland 30th August 2011 5:59pm #UserID: 637 Posts: 1217 View All Jason's Edible Fruit Trees |

Andy H says... hey thanks alot for your help guys....really appreiciate your willingness to share what you know! hey so iv been collecting all the avo seeds i get now....and trying to grow them in a cup each, with tooth pics, ya know? (is that the best way to get them started/germinated)...so that when they are big enough i can just get cuttings of my bacon and graft them on to these seedlings. that will work good right? hey and was wondering what are the best fertilisers for avo's?..Dynamic Lifter? old animal manuer? thanks!

Jason says... Andy just stick them pointed side up in a pot and the seeds will grow. Grafting them isn't all that easy compared to most plants but if you plant enough seeds and try enough times you'll get a formula that works for you eventually. The way to cheat and make it as easy as possible is wrap the scion of the graft with parafilm tape and use a good quality stretchy tape for the union itself. I can't stress enough how much parafilm helps, before I started using it I'd have plastic bags over all my grafts with a bit of water in there and trying to keep all the plants as still as possible in just the right temperature. Parafilm just makes it a lot more simple. Looks like a nice orchard you have in the making there. If you plant a heap of seeds this Spring and Summer you'll be able to graft them in about November next year. With fertilizer just use anything for evergreen fruit trees, it's a bit stronger than the stuff you would use for stone fruit. You want to try and encourage good strong growth but you can over do it and that causes the plant to not flower the following year (it's happened to a couple of my trees this year since I got a bit over excited with all the growth I could push during the wet summer last year :D) | About the Author Jason Portland 6th September 2011 3:19pm #UserID: 637 Posts: 1217 View All Jason's Edible Fruit Trees |
