07/01/16 Frost: About My Edible BackyardWhy Westy1 Love's Edible Plants We recently bought a beautiful 1 acre block in the Adelaide Hills area of SA, in a temperate environment. Summers are hot and dry, and winters are cold (many frosts) and wet. Our block is on a slight slope and has good top soil over underlying clay. We love new flavours and exotic fruits, and in the 10 months we have been here have almost filled the acre with a mix of exotic fruit and nuts as well as over 100 natives (and lots of chickens). It is our dream to live a sustainable lifestyle, growing unsual fruit to share with friends and strangers at markets! Fruit Tree Forum ContributionsWesty1 Forum ContributionsBabaco - I'm having the same problem Damian, also feeding with chook manure. From what I've read it could either be too much nitrogen or because night temperatures are still too low for fruit set (it's still getting down to 6C at night where I am). Fruit Tree Forum LikesWesty1 has LIKED the following:Australian lime lemon thornless found at bunnings - I'm curious as to what they actually are, so I'm going to weight in my 2 cents. MaryT's first pic - I think this could be a generic photo. The lime has seeds - so it can be West Indian Lime as Tahitian has no seeds. The skin is not lumpy, so can'..Liked Answer 3354 days 5hrs |

Avocado - Hass (A) (Grafted) 9/10Westy1's Edible FruitsUpdate: 3228 days 20hrs Comments: - We purchased this 5ft tree from a local nursery for a good price. We built a large mound to improve drainage (we have clay soils) using a combination of quality soil from under an acacia baileyana, composted chicken poo/straw and a bit of cow manure. We staked it on 3 sides to help protect it from the wind. It is partly shaded from a eucalypt branch overhead. Survived winter frosts without any damage in Adelaide hills. We are on only rainwater so water it by hand once a week at the moment, probably more during its first summer and then it'll mostly be on its own. No flowers yet but shouldn't be long Planted: 2015 Height 1.6 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 1 Sun/Shade: Medium Sun Water Given in: Spring Fertiliser or Organics Used: Manure, gypsum and organics When I Fertilise: Spring Organic Status:Organic Was this review helpful?
