I'm trying to create a list of semi-dwarf fruit trees that I could grow in my new 12m*17m backyard in Melbourne. Suggestions to the list are most welcome. Do Longan, Paw Paw, Mango and Lychee grow well in Melbourne?

Ramesh the longan, lychee, mango and pawpaw are not ideally suited to Melbourne, we do not recommend them for your climate, not to say you wouldn't succeed. I would however point you in the direction of Louis Glowingski's book - The Complete Book of Fruit Growing in Australia as he is a local to Melbourne and has lots of information about growing fruit trees in your climate.
The A16 macadamia is semi dwarf and worth trying in Melbourne, Apples come on semi dwarf rootstocks, blueberries are perfect, ceylon hill gooseberry, feijoas, citrus, berries and kiwi fruit if you want to construct a trellis, mulberries, the dwarf black and red shahtoot, dwarf peach, persimmon - Ichikikijiro and pomegranate.

Hi Kath,
Thanks for the reply. Please do not hesitate to keep going.

I've signed off the loan for my new house this week and the huge backyard will be ready soon. I'm so exicted...

Congrats on your new home Ramesh! Also, another great book is one from Diggers called, The Australian Fruit and Vegetable Garden, by Clive Blazey that also has specific info on areas all over Australia and has lots of info in regards to dwarf fruit trees and design templates that demonstrate how to fit as many fruit/vege plants into a residential garden as possible. It is a personal favourite of mine. Here is a link...if you didnt want to purchase it, perhaps your local library stocks it.
