Kangaroo Paw - Bush Pearl Anigozanthos sp.

Pretty pink flowers and a prolific flowerer on a compact plant make this a great choice. Plant in full or part sun position with well drained soils. Cut old flowering stems back to their base to tidy up the plant and encourage repeat flowering. Remove any dead stems from the base of the shoot. New shoots will appear from underground rhizomes. Older plants will benefit by the annual removal of any damaged leaves. Protect from heavy frost.If drainage is poor, such as in most clay soils, break down the clay with gypsum or build up the bed to provide good drainage.

This is a beautiful tree with large glossy leaves and stunning pendulous flowers. The flowers produce large quantities of nectar which attract lots of wildlife. Cassowary love feeding on the large fruits when in season. Also called the mango pine, this deciduous or semi-deciduous tree is found in New Guinea and Australia chiefly in coastal areas. The glossy leaves tend to be whorled at the ends of the branches, The fragrant white flowers are in long pendulous spikes and appear just prior to the new growth flush. Will grow as far south as subtropical Northern NSW.

Cordyline Red Star Compliments of Dobbies

Cordyline - Red Star Cordyline australis

A fast growing native to New Zealand that can be grown as a palm-like shrub or a small tree. Its narrow, sword-like upper leaves remain erect while the lower leaves in the tip cluster droop. Panicles of fragrant white flowers appear in late spring, followed by small white or blue fruits. Red Star is grown for its rusty bronze-red leaves and is often used for height and texture in annual container plantings. Cordylines grow best in deep, well-drained soil in full sun, and will tolerate alkaline soils, drought and seaside gardens.

Burdekin Plum Pleiogynium timorense

This close relative of the Mango is a native tropical rainforest tree. The deep purple fleshy plum-like fruits need to be held for some days to soften and mellow. Early settlers (probably taught by the Aborigines) were known to bury them in the ground which had the effect of softening them and increasing palatability. The fruit can be eaten raw, or used in wines, jams and jellies. The burdekin plum is exceptionally hardy and can cope with long dry periods once it is established. It does however prefer free draining soil and lots of sunshine to perform well.

Sometimes known as Caimito is native to the West Indies where it is a very popular fruit. Fruit can be purple or green skinned. When cut in half there is an attractive star pattern. Japanese Raisin Hovenia dulcis

A fast growing tree that produces small raisin like fruit from the trunk. The Raisin Tree is deciduous and can grow to a height of 21m but is more commonly around 9m with a single trunk and a rounded head. Raspberry - Atherton Rubus probus

Native to the highlands of far North Queensland, this raspberry is a sweet red-orange berry that grows on an upright suckering, sprawling ground cover with cane-like stems. It is delicious eaten fresh. Their popularity means they are often on supermarket shelves. The taste is milder than the European raspberry. The plant is very resilient to warmer growing conditions and can produce up to 3 kg per plant. It does need some management so it won't take over the garden, grow it where the suckers can be mowed over, or alternatively grow it in a large pot.

A very handsome evergreen, reaching a height of 8 - 15 metres and bearing the worlds largest fruit. Fruits can weigh up to 20kg. Crisp textured Jackfruits are best eaten fresh, they are delicious with a pineapple after taste. Non Crisp Jackfruits are best eaten dried or frozen. Seed has been selected from superior Crisp cultivars. Being seedlings they are initially more vigorous and hence more likely to establish in marginal climates.
