Lemon Grass Cymbopogon citratus

Lemongrass is one of the most versatile of herbs. It makes a delicious herbal tea, is often used in cooking, as an effective pest repellent and an almost impenetrable weed barrier. Tie the outer leaves in a loop and cook with food to impart flavour. Be sure to remove before serving. Incredibly fast to become established and drought tolerant. The fleshy, purple part of the stem is used in curry pastes and can be ground into a paste and added to marinades and sauces to impart a fresh, lemony flavour.

Vetiver Grass (Chrysopogon zizanioides) By Forest and Kim Starr [CC BY 2.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/)] From Flickr https://flic.kr/p/DS8pMb

Vetiver Grass - Monto Chrysopogon zizanioides

A non-invasive clumping type grass that does not produce viable seed. Excellent for erosion control as it produces a massive root system that grows straight down rather than out from the plant. It creates a sort of curtain beneath the soil, trapping sediment and slowing down the movement of water. Because the grass grows down instead of outward, it does not become invasive. The roots are very deep, so it’s best to decide carefully where to plant it because it is very hard to dig up.

Burdekin Plum Pleiogynium timoriense

This close relative of the Mango is a native tropical rainforest tree. The deep purple, fleshy, plum-like fruits need to be held for some days to soften and mellow before eating. Early settlers (probably taught by the Aborigines) were known to bury them in the ground which had the effect of softening them and increasing palatability. The fruit can be eaten raw, or used in wines, jams and jellies. The Burdekin plum is exceptionally hardy and can cope with long dry periods once it is established. It does however prefer free draining soil and lots of sunshine to perform well. Trees are monoecio
