Phil@Tyalgum starts with ... I would encourage anyone who wishes to propagate a favourite tree from a private garden or public place to consider air layering as an option. I had a beautiful white loquat at our old farm in Central Victoria, undoubtedly originally only a seedling, but when putting the property on the market thought I'd give this method a try. I managed to see root development after about six weeks or so and was able to pot it up and now have a healthy young tree which I brought north with me. Well worth the effort.

MaryT says... A friend 'made' a new tree from my lemon once. Here's a link to how-to air layer: http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/extension/ornamentals/airlayer/airlayer.html | About the Author MaryT Sydney 8th February 2012 5:02pm #UserID: 5412 Posts: View All MaryT's Edible Fruit Trees |

amanda says... That's a good link MaryT - thanks. Phil that is a lovely tree! Has very pointy leaves doesn't it? Has it developed a sturdy root system? I read somewhere that plants that grow from cuttings don't form a tap root and so their root system develops a little differently... Would it be the same with air layering do u think? | About the Author amanda Geraldton, 400km North of Perth 8th February 2012 5:26pm #UserID: 2309 Posts: View All amanda's Edible Fruit Trees |

Phil@Tyalgum says... The roots were quite fragile at first and came out at strange angles, it was kind of touch and go a few times but I severed it just before the Black Saturday fires in 2009 so if it can live through that it can live through anything.. I'm pleased it worked as it was the first time I've tried it. | About the Author Phil@Tyalgum Murwillumbah 8th February 2012 5:29pm #UserID: 960 Posts: View All Phil@Tyalgum's Edible Fruit Trees![]() |

Phil@Tyalgum says... We were just a few miles west of where the biggest fire started - fortunately we'd just handed over the keys to the farm to the new owners and were waiting to drive north. I had all my precious and rare plants potted up and staying with a friend, but it got to 47C so was a struggle to keep them looking at their best through those temperatures. Our neighbour lost his sister and her partner (actor Reg Evans) who were never found and relatives of ours lost their house. | About the Author Phil@Tyalgum Murwillumbah 9th February 2012 9:04am #UserID: 960 Posts: View All Phil@Tyalgum's Edible Fruit Trees![]() |
