J starts with ... I have an oriental persimmon (D. kaki) and am looking to graft a black sapote (D. digyna) onto it. They are both Diospyros species so they should be compatible? The only thing I can think of it that the black sapote is a tropical/ sub tropical species while the persimmon is temperate. Anyone have any experience grafting these two species? jakfruit etiquette says... There are many Diospyros spp, its a very diverse genus. Hard to say how close yours are related. D.kaki can be grafted onto D. virginiana, and onto 1 or 2 other spp. Citrus is commonly grafted onto the deciduous Poncirus trifoliata rootstock. I haven't heard of the kaki/black sapote graft. Some unusal grafts succeed when some living branches of the stock plant are left to grow. There may be grafting techniques/styles that are better at overcoming incompatability. | About the Author jakfruit etiquette 19th January 2012 9:22pm #UserID: 0 Posts: |

J says... Thanks for the info good to hear that deciduous / evergreen might not be as big an issue as I thought. I was only planing on grafting the black sapote because I have an existing persimmon and not enough space for a new tree. Thought I'd graft a branch not the whole tree. Just wanted to know if it was possible before buying a black sapote. Seems it might be. | About the Author J Syd 20th January 2012 7:23am #UserID: 2949 Posts: |
