a bit of wetting agent or detergent added to the water will help wet everything and prevent air sticking to grubs/insects or potting mix.
It will drown them quicker.

eg. a fly in water will buzz around on the surface, but add detergent (break surface tension of water) and it will drown and sometimes even sink!

Hi Julie - if above doesn't work by any chance - a pyrethrum drench will do the trick too..

Hi Amanda,

Many thanks for the advice I did try the method Virginny and Speedy gave to me and Lots of them Drown. I will keep an eye and see if any new batch hatching from the soil I will use try your method.

The small flying insects coming from your potting mix can be an indicator the mix is too wet. Slow down on watering and they should disappear. Pyrethrum spray will get rid of them too. Indoor plants will need a break outdoors occasionally, but make sure they are put in an area protected from the elements - eg under shadecloth.

Hey Julie - do u think they may be 'vinegar flies'? u may want to check the pH of the soil too - in case it's gone sour maybe? I get these from time to time - particularly in winter.

Hi Amanda,

I used the cheap potting mix from Coles and I water with seasol so I am not sure because of the cheap potting mix or the seasol or a combination of both. I will check the PH and see. Thanks again.

Glory, first of all do you know if your neighbours have the same insect problem?
If they do then it is plague of some sort that will diminish in time!
If not, & yours is the only house with the problem I would say that there is an odour,or perfume that is attracting these flies possibly because it either smells like the fruit or flower that they live on or the pheromones that the insects produce themselves. Check out polishes, aerosols, childrens lollies etc,or even something that is brand new to the house that has a strong smell.

Glory the insect is a moth fly (Psychodinae) and the lavae often are in organic films such as on the lining of bathroom drains which could be the origin.

Thanks guys for your ideas. We have a Golden retriever dog. We give dry foods twice a day, but he eats whenever he wants. So the food is in his bowl mostly all day. It is only different small in my house. But the moth fly won't sit there. Snottiegobble, do you think, the dog biscuits attracts the moth.

Also the drainage may be a problem. So i plan to clean all the wash basin and bathroom drainage.
Thanks Mike,snottiegobble and micarle.
