Guys, I have a few Monstera seeds to give away if anyone would like them. I have never tried growing them from seed before so can't give any advise, but one we ate the other day had a dozen or more seeds.

Easily grown from seed , I have had fruit in 4 years from seed grown plants , and in 3 years from large stem cuttings . Maybe these were spoilt a bit with massive amounts of mulch and compost , but I enjoyed the fruits so much I had them planted all over Mums yard in Childers . One year I noticed small beetles crawling all over a freshly opened Monstera flower , and the next year found that fruit to be full of seeds . Very dissapointing as not much fruit to eat . Never pick the fruit until it starts to hang down from usual vertical to almost horizontal .Always best to allow some scales to fall .

Thanks for the advice, I have been seeing the fruit for sale in the local markets lately, very tasty, in fact one of the nicest fruit around.

What is to go with those prickles (Blades) I remember as a kid eating them and swore off them because of the pain.
How do you eat them without the pain?
I(The wife) put one in 12 months ago.
I remember they did taste good.

They have to be very ripe with the skin falling away before you eat them, otherwise you will get spiked in the tongue. Eat only the part with no skin, do not go any further

What do you do with the unripe half? Will it continue to ripen if wrapped in glad-wrap in the fridge? Dont want the fruit flies to get into it if just left in the fruit bowl...

I always thought it was those black sheets between the segments.
So the prickles are in the skin?
To get this right, I take a very ripe segment and bite away the flesh and leave a buffer zone from the hex shaped skin?

It is calcium oxalate crystals in the unripe flesh that irritate the throat and mouth . That is why it always advised to not force the scales off the fruit to eat a Monstera . They ripen best at room temperature , insects can be kept away simply by wrapping in paper . Ripening can be sped up by placing the wrapped fruit inside a plastic bag with a ripe banana or an apple .

Right trikus,
to add to that, to avoid the oxalates, you can pick the soft fleshy bits out with a toothpick. It doesn t ripen all at once, so I just wrap the unripe leftovers with glad wrap and peel off the soft sections as it ripens till its all gone.
