I've done this with 2 of my mangoes Cathy, and both missed a year of fruiting. I now have 3 trees, and I take it in turn to prune a different one each year so they all stay small, and so I still get fruit off the other 2 which wern't pruned.
The one I pruned the year before last, had a bumper crop on this year, which we have just finished eating.

Excellent idea paula-f, that way you are assured of a crop. As a rule of thumb you can cut the tree back by 1/3 without sacrificing to much fruit, but I think it depends on what you cut out as well.
I prune my tree just after we pick and still retain a crop.

Many thanks Paula and Wayne. The work was done today and it does look pretty drastic, but at least it will be easier to reach the fruit when it does come back!
