R2E2 Mangoes

    6 responses

Wayne starts with ...
I was visiting my home town of Bowen on the weekend and drove past one of the R2E2 orchids up there.

I was totally gobsmacked to see thousands of freshly picked mangoes laying on the ground with, what appeared to be, nothing wrong with them.

As it turned out, I knew the people so the first question was why? There is nothing wrong with the fruit except for skin blemish caused by rubbing against something in windy conditions, what a waste.

I thought I would share some photos and hope you can make out all the mangoes on the ground. Note how they grafted the R2E2 on to the Kensington Pride trunks. I also found out that the name R2E2 came from the row number that this variety was first established by the DPI in Bowen.

Yeah, tax effective investment has meant there are 1,000's of acres more mangoes these days run by management companies as tax dodges, thus there is no market for fruit that is slightly marked and only a poor market for excellent fruit due to over supply.

What a total waist they look like very healthy fruit trees. I have seen way worse mangoe in brisbane being sold for over $3.

The good thing about growing them up north is that you harvest the fruit before christmas. It isn't until jan feb that we can harvest mangos down in brisbane.

London John says...
I'd love to be able to buy Aussie mangoes in London, particularly Bowen or, better still, R2E2. You'd get a premium price here too, as Pakistani Alphone sell for around $6 each, more in the up market shops (>$12 in Harrods).

If they can ship them to London from Pakistan, then why not from the NT?
