white choko

    65 responses

Kerry starts with ...
Hello everyone
Does anyone grow white choko and can offer a seed or two or three...I have not grown or eaten them for years. My late fatherinlaw loved them but said his would get stung too much to bother growing them. I would love to grow some in his honour. We lost him a couple of months ago. Hoping anyone out there knows how I can get onto some seeds please. Have a great weekend. Best wishes Kerry

Hi Wazza, i'm on the North-west - Keperra.
I only have 3 fruits saved, and all have shot.
I'll get in contact with the three people who have replied.
i'm not sure what's particularly special about them. I find them a bit better than the green, but i know folks here have been after them, so have saved a few to spread around.

Hi All

To those who received the white choko's or expecting them, please consider doing what BJ did for me - offer them to those in need next season.

I have since cut my plant right back after it started growing over my dwarf mulberry.

BJ deserves a lot of thanks.

Many thanks for the nice words I have received in emails.

Cheers,
Warren

For those not sure on how to plant choko's - I suggest the following.

I would plant the choko out after the shoot is about 4" to 6" long. Also, I would plant it out sideways as well - half above the ground and half below it. As seen in the picture 1.

The root system comes out of the same spot as the shoot, as seen in picture 2 below. Planting it sideways means that the roots can focus on the soil and the shoot can focus on the air and sunlight.

Hope this helps ;-)

If you can see roots MaryT it should grow again, chokos often die off in the winter in cooler climes and then just sprout again when it warms up.

I think the white ones just look unique and special - if you want to eat a choko - try and get a white one - they are best eaten when the are just smaller than an egg. I just bought one on eBay to grow some and help peeps out again.

Hi Kerry, I only have green choko vine but you mentioned about the chokos being stung? My green chokos are being stung and I was wondering if you knew of any natural fertilizer to use to stop them being stung.
Thanks
Kerrin
